Champagne has captured the imagination of world drinkers since its first discovery by English scientist Christopher Merrett in 1662. It was further developed by the vignerons of the Champagne region through the late 1600s, culminating in the delightfully fizzy decadent wine drunk all over the world today.

The Champagne region has undergone serious major transformations in the last few centuries, largely due to the French government's inheritance laws, which have caused the dismantling of many great Champagne houses. Large, famous Champagne houses are now mostly owned by large conglomerates such as Veuve Clicquot,  Moët & Chandon, and G.H. Mumm.  Whilst these giants dominate the world Champagne market from their sheer power and strength in marketing, making them household names the world over, quality is often overlooked for profit making and market power.

For many wine enthusiasts, it is the beauty and quality of Grower Champagne Houses that continue to capture and delight; focusing purely on quality and producing the best they can from vines they painstakingly grow themselves.

At Wine Republic, we only stock the best Grower Champagnes, championing wines where every single dollar is spent on producing the very best wine in the bottle. And we intend to share the story of each Grower's Champagne; where purity, integrity and skill is harnessed to produce a wine that speaks of place and a sense of belonging.

Over the course of the month leading up to World Champagne Day on Friday October 24 2025; we will take you through some of our favourite Grower Champagne houses. Santé!
