Description

Based on the 2023 vintage with 20% reserve wine, this is predominately Pinot Meunier from a 2.2-hectare vineyard (Les Béguines) in Gueux, about 10 kilometres west of Reims in the north of Champagne. A rare sight, indeed, it is to see Pinot Meunier chiefly used in wines from Champagne, this cuvée now contains small amounts of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc; making up about 6% of the blend. The vines were planted in the 1960s to a slow growing rootstocks that penetrate deep into the ground; the soils of which consist of layered calcareous sand over clay, with more calcareous sand below. Vineyards are managed organically, with soils cultivated by horse. It's left unfined, unfiltered, and without additions.

Formerly quite austere and needing years to settle, the Les Beguines of the 2023 season has shown to be much more approachable in its youth, due in part to the increased amount of reserve wine used in this release, as well as the warmth provided during the 2023 growing season.

There's beautiful weight on the palate, showing the lushness provided from a Pinot Meunier dominant wine. Citrus gives way into layers of juicy pears, stone fruit, and a touch of honey and spice, all kept tight and riveting by mineral tension and a powdery grip, that finishes long and fresh. This oozes grace and poise, and would reward tremendously with careful cellaring.
