Pat Underwood has been working with Nebbiolo from the Willoughby Bridge vineyard in Colbinabbin for years. The north-south oriented site has fine iron and clay-rich soils and was planted by Steve Travers, who still lives at and farms the site. Fruit for the 2023 Rosé comes from two picks of an older block (planted in 1998) of CVT 230 clone Nebbiolo. The lion’s share of the Nebbiolo Rosé from this site usually finds its way into Pat’s light, Nebbiolo-based reds. This year, three barrels stood out for their “particular depth and deliciousness”. The selected wines matured on lees in barrel until summer with just one racking and minimal added sulphur. Pat then held the wine in bottle for a further eight months before release.
