Description

'Suze' was the brainchild of Fernand Moreaux of the Rousseau, Laurens and Moreaux Distillery on the outskirts of Paris. In 1889, Wanting to stand out from the wine-based aperitifs that were all the rage at the time, he used the root of the Gentian plant, an alpine botanical, to create the base of his aperitif.

The Gentian was sourced from the Swiss Jura Mountains, and its unique flavour made it an instant sensation. Over the years, the aperitif has seen advertising materials produced by many artists, including Pablo Picasso - a testament to its popularity.

The modern day Suze is still sourced from Jura, but also from Auvergne. It is now sweeter than the original product, but loses none of the elegant bittersweet balance it has long been known for. Aromatic botanicals bring complexity to the flavour. It can be enjoyed neat and on ice, and can also be used as a bitter component for cocktails.
